Lake Hiawatha School-Wide Reading Program
This year we are encouraging our students to “book” a trip and Read Around the World! At our opening assembly, we learned how students around the world get books. It’s not as easy as you may think. Did you know that in some countries, children get books by camel, elephant, horse, or donkey? We are very lucky to have books at our fingertips. It’s up to us to read them and allow them to take us places.
Our reading incentive program will run from
October – May
Our goal is for all students to read every night for
at least 15 minutes!
Children can read independently or with an adult.
Each month, students will receive a reading calendar. Children should color a globe each night they read. Parents will initial the reading calendar on a weekly basis. Please keep the reading calendar in the homework folder, so that children, parents, and teachers can keep track of progress.
Each month, all children who participate will earn a “suitcase” for their in-class display. Classes with 100% monthly participation will earn a “suitcase” for the school-wide display.
Students will also earn a “reading ticket” for every 5 nights they read. These reading tickets will go into a raffle for a chance to win special monthly prizes! While the prizes are special, they are not the focus of our program. We want our children to feel the enjoyment and intrinsic rewards of reading!
All classes with 100% participation will be acknowledged during special school-wide announcements!
We hope you will travel with us by reading a book!
